What Homeowners Need to Know About Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air quality (IAQ) refers to the cleanliness and safety of the air inside your home. In Northeast Wisconsin, where homes are sealed tight during long winters, pollutants can become trapped and circulate continuously.

Common indoor air pollutants include:

  • Dust and pet dander
  • Mold spores and mildew
  • Pollen and outdoor allergens
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from cleaners and materials
  • Excess humidity or overly dry air

Poor indoor air quality can affect your comfort, health, and even the efficiency of your HVAC system.

That’s where Hockers comes in — offering professional testing and solutions tailored to Wisconsin homes.

Common Problems People Face With Indoor Air Quality

Many homeowners don’t realize their air quality is an issue until symptoms become noticeable. Some of the most common signs include:

  • Persistent allergy or asthma symptoms indoors
  • Musty or stale odors
  • Uneven humidity levels
  • Excess dust buildup
  • Headaches or fatigue at home
  • Condensation on windows during winter

In areas like Green Bay and De Pere, seasonal shifts can make these problems worse. Cold winters keep homes sealed, while humid summers can introduce moisture-related issues.

If you’re noticing any of these signs, it’s worth having your air tested by a trusted local expert.

How Does an Indoor Air Quality Assessment Work?

Hockers Home Services takes a thorough, step-by-step approach to evaluating your indoor air:

1. Home Evaluation

A technician inspects your home’s layout, HVAC system, and ventilation.

2. Air Testing

Specialized tools measure:

  • Particulate levels (dust, allergens)
  • Humidity levels
  • Airflow and circulation
  • Potential contaminants

3. Problem Identification

We pinpoint the root causes — whether it’s poor ventilation, dirty ductwork, or excess moisture.

4. Customized Solutions

You’ll receive clear recommendations tailored to your home and budget.

This process ensures you’re not just treating symptoms — you’re solving the actual problem.

Why Indoor Air Quality Matters for Wisconsin Homes

Homes in Northeast Wisconsin face unique environmental challenges:

Cold Winters

  • Windows stay closed for months
  • Air becomes dry and stagnant
  • Pollutants accumulate indoors

Humid Summers

  • Moisture levels rise
  • Mold and mildew risks increase
  • HVAC systems work harder

Year-Round Impact

Poor air quality can:

  • Reduce HVAC efficiency
  • Increase energy costs
  • Affect your family’s health

A professional assessment from Hockers helps you stay ahead of these issues before they become serious.

Solutions Hockers Home Services May Recommend

After your indoor air quality assessment, Hockers may suggest targeted improvements such as:

Air Filtration Upgrades

High-efficiency filters remove more dust, allergens, and particles.

Whole-Home Air Purifiers

Advanced systems clean air throughout your entire home.

Humidity Control

  • Humidifiers for dry winter air
  • Dehumidifiers for summer moisture

Ventilation Improvements

Better airflow helps remove stale air and bring in fresh air.

Duct Cleaning or Sealing

Removes buildup and improves system efficiency.

Every recommendation is based on your home’s specific needs — no one-size-fits-all solutions.

How to Know When You Need Professional Help With Indoor Air Quality

You should consider an indoor air quality assessment if:

  • You’ve recently renovated your home
  • Your HVAC system struggles to maintain comfort
  • Family members experience worsening allergies
  • Your home feels overly dry or humid
  • You notice unusual odors or stale air

If something feels “off” with your indoor environment, it’s worth having it checked.

DIY vs. Professional Air Quality Testing

While there are DIY air quality kits available, they often provide limited or incomplete results.

DIY Testing

  • Basic readings
  • No expert interpretation
  • Limited accuracy

Professional Assessment from Hockers

  • Comprehensive analysis
  • Advanced diagnostic tools
  • Clear, actionable solutions

For something as important as your home’s air, professional insight makes a significant difference.

We have called Hockers for our plumbing issues for 19 years. They have always been curious, friendly and very reliable. I had a plumbing issue yesterday and they were here today. I had a scheduling conflict today. I called them early and told the friendly ladies at the office. She got ahold of the plumber he switched his schedule to fit me in earlier. Thank you very much for your outstanding service over the years. You want to call these people. You won’t regret it.

Would definitely recommend. Water heater started to leak on a Sunday morning, called Hockers and they put me on the first appointment the next day to diagnose the issue. Todd provided multiple options and we had a new water heater within 24 hours. Price seemed competitive and within what I was expecting, but admittedly did not shop around. Friendly service throughout. Highly recommend.

We had a very minor gas leak happening with our 20 yr old furnace and needed a new valve on the gas line. This was our first call ever to Hockers for help. Matt was very knowledgable, explained what needed to be done, left to go get the part 45 min away and came back to finish the job. He was professional, efficient and kind and did a great job. From my call to Lisa this morning, who was also very pleasant & kind, to the end of the repair, it all was a great experience. The cost was expected and fair on a 20 yr old furnace. Hockers is my new go-to when needed for heating/cooling/plumbing/electrical! Thank you!!

Royce’s completed a basic inspection of the electrical supply system to a field power station for a pond aerator & irrigation pump from the electrical breaker to the end users about 100+ feet away. He did not find anything defective but helped me understand how the long run of supply wiring and the relatively small amp draw “could” result in the 20 amp breaker failing to trip when expected to do so. Royce offered a solution for better protecting the aerator pump which I will follow-up on with Hockers later. The price for the basic inspection ($288) seemed high, but Royce hinted that some portion may be applied to the future work if I decide to move forward.

The plumber for Hockers, Jason K. did an excellent job. He was able to install a On Demand Water heater. My old tank style was starting to leak on thru the bottom. I called Hockers that morning, Jason was able to get to my house at 1:00pm and stayed till the job was done. He was very professional, great customer service skills. I recommend Hockers and Jason K.
