Common Furnace Problems and When to Call a Professional in Northeast Wisconsin

over 1500+ reviews

When winter settles over De Pere and Green Bay, your furnace becomes the most important system in your home. In Northeast Wisconsin, where temperatures regularly drop below freezing for extended stretches, heating equipment runs hard for months at a time.

While modern furnaces are built for durability, heavy seasonal use increases wear and tear. Small issues can quickly turn into larger problems if ignored.

At Hockers Home Services, we’ve been helping Wisconsin homeowners stay warm for over 30 years. Understanding common furnace problems — and knowing when to call a professional — can protect your comfort, safety, and energy bills.

If your furnace isn’t performing like it should, call Hockers Home Services today for reliable heating service in De Pere and the greater Green Bay area.

Why Furnace Issues Are So Common in Wisconsin

In milder climates, furnaces may operate intermittently. In Northeast Wisconsin, they often run daily from October through April.

Extended runtime increases the likelihood of:

  • Component fatigue
  • Airflow restrictions
  • Electrical wear
  • Sensor malfunctions
  • Ignition problems

Add fluctuating temperatures and heavy snowfall, and your system works even harder to maintain indoor comfort.

Routine maintenance reduces risk, but even well-maintained systems can experience issues over time.

1. Furnace Won’t Turn On

One of the most alarming problems during a Green Bay cold snap is a furnace that won’t start at all.

Possible causes include:

  • Thermostat malfunction
  • Tripped circuit breaker
  • Ignition system failure
  • Faulty flame sensor
  • Gas supply interruption

While checking your thermostat settings and breaker panel is safe, deeper diagnostics require professional expertise.

If your furnace won’t power on during freezing weather, contact Hockers — your trusted Wisconsin heating experts — immediately.

2. Blowing Cold Air Instead of Heat

If your furnace is running but blowing cool air, several issues may be involved.

Common causes include:

  • Dirty air filter restricting airflow
  • Pilot light or ignition problems
  • Overheated system triggering safety shutoff
  • Ductwork leaks

In De Pere homes, we frequently see airflow restrictions caused by neglected filters during peak winter months.

If replacing the filter doesn’t solve the issue, professional inspection is necessary.

3. Frequent Cycling (Short Cycling)

Short cycling occurs when your furnace turns on and off rapidly without completing a full heating cycle.

This may be caused by:

  • Dirty filters
  • Oversized equipment
  • Faulty thermostat
  • Blocked vents
  • Flame sensor issues

Short cycling increases energy use and accelerates wear on components.

Need help fast? Contact Hockers — your trusted Wisconsin home comfort experts.

4. Strange Noises During Operation

Furnaces should operate relatively quietly. Unusual sounds often signal mechanical issues.

Listen for:

  • Banging or booming
  • Rattling
  • Squealing
  • Grinding
  • Whistling

Banging noises may indicate delayed ignition. Squealing often points to blower motor issues. Grinding could signal bearing failure.

Ignoring unusual noises can lead to larger repairs if not addressed promptly.

5. Rising Energy Bills Without Increased Usage

If your heating bills climb significantly without a change in usage, your furnace may be losing efficiency.

Potential causes include:

  • Dirty burners
  • Heat exchanger issues
  • Poor airflow
  • Aging components
  • Improper calibration

Because Wisconsin winters demand heavy heating, even minor efficiency losses become noticeable on monthly bills.

Schedule service with Hockers Home Services to restore optimal performance and reduce energy waste.

6. Uneven Heating Throughout Your Home

Cold rooms are a common complaint in Green Bay homes.

Uneven heating may stem from:

  • Ductwork blockages
  • Airflow imbalances
  • Blower motor problems
  • Insulation gaps
  • Aging equipment

Professional system balancing and inspection can restore consistent comfort.

7. Yellow Pilot Light or Flame Issues

Your furnace flame should burn blue. A yellow or flickering flame may indicate combustion issues.

This can signal:

  • Dirty burners
  • Ventilation problems
  • Carbon monoxide risks

Any suspected combustion issue requires immediate professional attention for safety.

Hockers Home Services prioritizes safe heating operation in every service call.

What Homeowners Can Safely Check Themselves

Before calling for service, homeowners can safely:

  • Replace a dirty air filter
  • Check thermostat batteries
  • Confirm thermostat settings
  • Inspect breaker panel
  • Ensure vents are open and unobstructed

However, internal repairs involving gas lines, electrical components, or ignition systems should always be handled by licensed professionals.

When to Call a Professional Immediately

Certain furnace symptoms require urgent service:

  • Burning smells
  • Carbon monoxide detector alerts
  • Loud banging at startup
  • Repeated system shutdowns
  • Complete heating failure during freezing weather

In Northeast Wisconsin, waiting during subzero conditions can lead to frozen pipes and additional damage.

At Hockers Home Services, we provide responsive heating repair throughout De Pere and surrounding communities.

Repair vs. Replacement: How to Decide

If your furnace is over 15–20 years old and experiencing frequent repairs, replacement may be more cost-effective long-term.

Consider replacement if:

  • Repairs are becoming frequent
  • Heat exchanger is cracked
  • System efficiency is low
  • Utility bills continue rising
  • Comfort remains inconsistent

Our team provides honest recommendations based on system condition, not sales pressure.

The Importance of Annual Furnace Maintenance

Preventative maintenance is one of the most effective ways to avoid mid-winter breakdowns.

A professional tune-up includes:

  • Burner cleaning
  • Heat exchanger inspection
  • Airflow measurement
  • Electrical testing
  • Safety control verification

Because Wisconsin heating systems operate for extended seasons, annual service is especially important in Northeast Wisconsin.

Regular maintenance helps:

  • Improve efficiency
  • Extend system lifespan
  • Prevent emergency repairs
  • Maintain manufacturer warranties

Frequently Asked Questions About Furnace Problems

How often should I replace my furnace filter?

Every 1–3 months during peak heating season.

Why does my furnace smell when it first turns on?

Dust burning off after months of inactivity is normal briefly. Persistent odors require inspection.

How long should a furnace last?

Most systems last 15–20 years with proper maintenance.

Can I repair ignition components myself?

No. Gas and electrical components require professional handling.

We have called Hockers for our plumbing issues for 19 years. They have always been curious, friendly and very reliable. I had a plumbing issue yesterday and they were here today. I had a scheduling conflict today. I called them early and told the friendly ladies at the office. She got ahold of the plumber he switched his schedule to fit me in earlier. Thank you very much for your outstanding service over the years. You want to call these people. You won’t regret it.

Would definitely recommend. Water heater started to leak on a Sunday morning, called Hockers and they put me on the first appointment the next day to diagnose the issue. Todd provided multiple options and we had a new water heater within 24 hours. Price seemed competitive and within what I was expecting, but admittedly did not shop around. Friendly service throughout. Highly recommend.

We had a very minor gas leak happening with our 20 yr old furnace and needed a new valve on the gas line. This was our first call ever to Hockers for help. Matt was very knowledgable, explained what needed to be done, left to go get the part 45 min away and came back to finish the job. He was professional, efficient and kind and did a great job. From my call to Lisa this morning, who was also very pleasant & kind, to the end of the repair, it all was a great experience. The cost was expected and fair on a 20 yr old furnace. Hockers is my new go-to when needed for heating/cooling/plumbing/electrical! Thank you!!

Royce’s completed a basic inspection of the electrical supply system to a field power station for a pond aerator & irrigation pump from the electrical breaker to the end users about 100+ feet away. He did not find anything defective but helped me understand how the long run of supply wiring and the relatively small amp draw “could” result in the 20 amp breaker failing to trip when expected to do so. Royce offered a solution for better protecting the aerator pump which I will follow-up on with Hockers later. The price for the basic inspection ($288) seemed high, but Royce hinted that some portion may be applied to the future work if I decide to move forward.

The plumber for Hockers, Jason K. did an excellent job. He was able to install a On Demand Water heater. My old tank style was starting to leak on thru the bottom. I called Hockers that morning, Jason was able to get to my house at 1:00pm and stayed till the job was done. He was very professional, great customer service skills. I recommend Hockers and Jason K.
