The Truth About Garbage Disposal Maintenance in Northeast Wisconsin

over 1500+ reviews

Garbage disposals are one of those kitchen appliances most homeowners don’t think about — until something goes wrong. When working properly, they quietly grind food scraps and help keep your kitchen drain flowing smoothly. But in homes across De Pere and Green Bay, we regularly see garbage disposals fail far earlier than they should.

Why? Because most homeowners were never taught how to maintain them correctly.

At Hockers Plumbing, Heating, Cooling, & Electrical, we’ve been serving Northeast Wisconsin families for over 30 years, and we’ve seen just about every disposal problem imaginable — from burned-out motors to completely blocked drain lines caused by improper use. The truth is, garbage disposal maintenance is simple, but misinformation often leads to costly repairs.

If your garbage disposal is making unusual noises, draining slowly, or not turning on at all, call Hockers Plumbing, Heating, Cooling, & Electrical today for reliable plumbing service in De Pere and the greater Green Bay area.

What a Garbage Disposal Actually Does

Despite the name, a garbage disposal isn’t designed to handle garbage in the traditional sense.

Inside the unit, spinning impellers push food waste against a stationary grind ring, breaking it into tiny particles that can safely travel through your plumbing system. There are no sharp blades like many people assume.

Garbage disposals are engineered for small, soft food scraps — not large quantities of waste or tough materials.

When used properly, a disposal can last 8 to 15 years. When misused, it may fail in half that time.

The Most Common Misconceptions About Garbage Disposals

Many disposal problems in Green Bay homes start with common myths.

One widespread belief is that disposals can handle any leftover food. In reality, certain foods create clogs or damage internal components.

Another misconception is that running hot water is best during operation. While hot water may seem logical, cold water is actually more effective. Cold water keeps fats solid so they can be chopped into small particles and flushed away. Hot water melts grease, allowing it to coat pipes further down the line.

Some homeowners also believe that citrus peels clean the unit. While they can temporarily freshen odors, fibrous peels can wrap around internal components and strain the motor.

If your disposal isn’t working like it used to, contact Hockers — your trusted Wisconsin plumbing experts — for professional evaluation.

What Should Never Go Down a Garbage Disposal

In Northeast Wisconsin, we often see disposal failures caused by a few repeat offenders.

Grease and oil are among the worst culprits. During cold Wisconsin winters, grease solidifies quickly inside pipes, creating stubborn clogs.

Other problematic items include:

  • Coffee grounds
  • Eggshell membranes
  • Pasta and rice
  • Potato peels
  • Celery and fibrous vegetables
  • Bones
  • Corn husks

Starchy foods like pasta and rice expand with water and can form thick blockages. Fibrous vegetables can wrap around internal parts. Coffee grounds accumulate into dense sludge.

Understanding these risks helps extend your disposal’s lifespan.

Signs Your Garbage Disposal Needs Maintenance

Garbage disposals rarely fail without warning. Early symptoms often appear first.

You may notice a humming sound without grinding. This usually indicates a jammed impeller. A simple reset may temporarily restore function, but repeated jams suggest deeper issues.

Slow draining water often points to buildup in the drainpipe rather than the disposal itself.

Persistent odors may signal trapped food particles beneath the splash guard.

Leaks under the sink may indicate worn seals or cracked housing — especially in older units.

If problems keep returning, schedule service with Hockers Plumbing, Heating, Cooling, & Electrical before minor issues turn into major plumbing repairs.

Proper Day-to-Day Maintenance

Routine care significantly reduces disposal problems.

Always run cold water before turning on the disposal. Keep the water running during operation and for several seconds afterward to flush debris completely.

Feed food gradually rather than dumping everything at once. Overloading strains the motor and increases clog risk.

Clean the splash guard regularly. Food particles often cling underneath and create odors.

Occasionally grinding small ice cubes can help knock loose buildup, but this should not be relied upon as a primary cleaning method.

Simple habits protect both your disposal and your plumbing system.

Why Wisconsin Homes Need Extra Caution

Northeast Wisconsin’s climate adds unique plumbing challenges.

Cold temperatures increase the likelihood of grease solidifying inside pipes. In some cases, partial blockages combined with freezing weather can worsen clogs.

Additionally, many older homes in Green Bay and De Pere have aging drain lines that are more susceptible to buildup.

At Hockers Plumbing, Heating, Cooling, & Electrical, we frequently respond to winter drain backups that began with improper disposal use.

Preventative maintenance reduces the risk of cold-weather plumbing emergencies.

When to Repair — and When to Replace

Not every disposal issue requires replacement.

Repairs often make sense if the unit is relatively new and the motor remains strong. Minor electrical resets or jam removals are common and inexpensive.

However, replacement may be recommended if the unit is over 10 years old, leaking internally, corroded, or repeatedly tripping breakers.

Modern disposals offer improved grinding power, quieter operation, and better durability.

As a family-owned company serving Northeast Wisconsin for decades, Hockers provides honest recommendations based on your system’s condition — not unnecessary upselling.

Professional Installation Matters

Improper installation can shorten disposal lifespan.

Incorrect mounting may cause vibration and leaks. Improper electrical connections create safety hazards. Poor drain alignment can increase clog risk.

Professional installation ensures secure mounting, proper sealing, and safe wiring.

In many De Pere homes, sink configurations require careful adjustment during replacement to prevent leaks and ensure long-term performance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Garbage Disposal Maintenance

Many homeowners ask whether chemical drain cleaners are safe. The answer is no. Harsh chemicals can damage seals and internal components.

Another common question is how long a disposal should run. The answer is until grinding noises stop, followed by several seconds of flushing with cold water.

Homeowners also wonder whether small bones are acceptable. Most residential disposals are not designed for bones and can become damaged.

Understanding proper usage extends lifespan and reduces plumbing strain.

Protect Your Kitchen Plumbing for the Long Term

Garbage disposals are convenient, but they require informed use and basic maintenance. Simple daily habits prevent costly repairs and protect your plumbing system year-round.

We have called Hockers for our plumbing issues for 19 years. They have always been curious, friendly and very reliable. I had a plumbing issue yesterday and they were here today. I had a scheduling conflict today. I called them early and told the friendly ladies at the office. She got ahold of the plumber he switched his schedule to fit me in earlier. Thank you very much for your outstanding service over the years. You want to call these people. You won’t regret it.

Would definitely recommend. Water heater started to leak on a Sunday morning, called Hockers and they put me on the first appointment the next day to diagnose the issue. Todd provided multiple options and we had a new water heater within 24 hours. Price seemed competitive and within what I was expecting, but admittedly did not shop around. Friendly service throughout. Highly recommend.

We had a very minor gas leak happening with our 20 yr old furnace and needed a new valve on the gas line. This was our first call ever to Hockers for help. Matt was very knowledgable, explained what needed to be done, left to go get the part 45 min away and came back to finish the job. He was professional, efficient and kind and did a great job. From my call to Lisa this morning, who was also very pleasant & kind, to the end of the repair, it all was a great experience. The cost was expected and fair on a 20 yr old furnace. Hockers is my new go-to when needed for heating/cooling/plumbing/electrical! Thank you!!

Royce’s completed a basic inspection of the electrical supply system to a field power station for a pond aerator & irrigation pump from the electrical breaker to the end users about 100+ feet away. He did not find anything defective but helped me understand how the long run of supply wiring and the relatively small amp draw “could” result in the 20 amp breaker failing to trip when expected to do so. Royce offered a solution for better protecting the aerator pump which I will follow-up on with Hockers later. The price for the basic inspection ($288) seemed high, but Royce hinted that some portion may be applied to the future work if I decide to move forward.

The plumber for Hockers, Jason K. did an excellent job. He was able to install a On Demand Water heater. My old tank style was starting to leak on thru the bottom. I called Hockers that morning, Jason was able to get to my house at 1:00pm and stayed till the job was done. He was very professional, great customer service skills. I recommend Hockers and Jason K.
