Why Your AC Is Freezing Up — and How to Prevent It in Wisconsin

Google-Logo-1 (1)

over 1500+ reviews

It might sound strange, but one of the most common summer air conditioning problems in De Pere and Green Bay is a frozen AC unit. When temperatures rise and Wisconsin humidity kicks in, the last thing homeowners expect is to see ice forming on their cooling system.

At Hockers Home Services, we regularly help Northeast Wisconsin homeowners diagnose and repair frozen air conditioners. While it may look minor at first, an AC that freezes up is a warning sign of an underlying issue that can lead to compressor damage, poor airflow, and expensive repairs if ignored.

If your air conditioner is freezing or not cooling properly, call Hockers Home Services today for trusted AC repair in De Pere and the greater Green Bay area.

What Causes an Air Conditioner to Freeze?

Your AC system works by absorbing heat from inside your home and transferring it outdoors. During this process, refrigerant flows through evaporator coils, which become very cold.

When something disrupts airflow or refrigerant balance, condensation on those coils can freeze instead of draining properly. Over time, that ice builds up and restricts cooling even further.

The most common causes in Northeast Wisconsin homes include:

  • Restricted airflow
  • Low refrigerant levels
  • Dirty evaporator coils
  • Blocked condensate drain lines
  • Mechanical component failure

Because Wisconsin summers can be humid, excess moisture in the air can accelerate freezing issues when airflow is restricted.

How Restricted Airflow Leads to Ice Buildup

Airflow problems are the number one reason we see frozen AC systems in Green Bay and De Pere.

Dirty Air Filters

A clogged air filter restricts the warm air moving across the evaporator coil. Without enough heat transfer, the coil temperature drops below freezing.

This is especially common during peak summer months when systems run constantly.

Blocked or Closed Vents

Furniture, rugs, or intentionally closed vents reduce circulation. When airflow drops, ice forms quickly.

Blower Motor Problems

If the blower motor isn’t operating properly, air won’t circulate as designed — leading to freezing.

If you suspect airflow problems, contact Hockers — your trusted Wisconsin cooling experts — before the issue worsens.

Low Refrigerant: A More Serious Concern

Low refrigerant is another common cause of frozen coils.

Refrigerant absorbs heat from your home. If levels are low due to a leak:

  • Pressure inside the system drops
  • Coil temperature falls below freezing
  • Ice begins to accumulate

Unlike a dirty filter, refrigerant issues require professional repair. Simply “topping off” refrigerant without fixing the leak won’t solve the problem.

At Hockers Home Services, our licensed technicians locate leaks, repair them properly, and recharge systems to manufacturer specifications.

Signs Your AC Is Starting to Freeze

Freezing doesn’t happen instantly. Watch for early warning signs:

  • Reduced airflow from vents
  • Warm air blowing intermittently
  • Ice visible on refrigerant lines
  • Water pooling around the unit
  • Higher humidity indoors
  • Longer cooling cycles

Many homeowners in Northeast Wisconsin first notice uneven cooling before seeing actual ice buildup.

What to Do If Your AC Is Frozen

If you discover ice on your AC system, follow these steps:

1. Turn Off the AC

Switch the thermostat to “off” to prevent further damage.

2. Turn On the Fan Setting

Set the fan to “on” to circulate air and help melt the ice.

3. Check the Air Filter

If it’s dirty, replace it immediately.

4. Schedule Professional Service

Even if the system temporarily works after thawing, underlying problems often remain.

Ignoring a frozen AC can lead to compressor failure — one of the most expensive cooling repairs.

Why Frozen AC Units Are Common in Wisconsin Summers

While Wisconsin isn’t known for extreme heat like southern states, our climate presents unique challenges:

  • High humidity during summer
  • Rapid temperature swings
  • Extended AC runtime during heat waves
  • Pollen and debris buildup during allergy season

Homes in Green Bay and surrounding Brown County communities often run cooling systems heavily during short but intense summer peaks.

Routine AC tune-ups from Hockers help prevent freezing by ensuring proper airflow, refrigerant levels, and drainage.

Schedule service with Hockers Home Services to keep your cooling system running efficiently all summer long.

Preventative Maintenance Checklist

Preventing frozen coils is easier — and more affordable — than repairing damage later.

Here’s a simple homeowner checklist:

  • Replace air filters every 1–3 months
  • Keep vents open and unobstructed
  • Clear debris from outdoor condenser units
  • Schedule annual AC maintenance
  • Address airflow issues promptly

Professional maintenance includes:

  • Coil cleaning
  • Refrigerant pressure testing
  • Electrical inspection
  • Drain line clearing
  • Blower performance checks

As a family-owned company serving De Pere and Green Bay for over 30 years, Hockers Home Services understands how Wisconsin climate conditions impact cooling systems.

Repair vs. Replacement: When Is It Time?

If your AC freezes repeatedly, it may indicate a deeper issue such as:

  • Aging equipment
  • Failing compressor
  • Extensive refrigerant leaks
  • Severely restricted ductwork

In some cases, repairing makes sense. In others, replacing an inefficient system may reduce long-term costs and improve comfort.

Our team provides honest recommendations based on your home’s size, cooling needs, and budget — never high-pressure sales tactics.

Frequently Asked Questions About Frozen AC Units

Can I pour hot water on the ice?

No. Rapid temperature changes can damage coils and components.

How long does it take for a frozen AC to thaw?

Depending on severity, it can take several hours to fully thaw.

Will running the fan fix the problem permanently?

No. It may melt the ice temporarily, but the root cause must be addressed.

Does a frozen AC increase energy bills?

Yes. Restricted airflow forces the system to work harder and longer.

We have called Hockers for our plumbing issues for 19 years. They have always been curious, friendly and very reliable. I had a plumbing issue yesterday and they were here today. I had a scheduling conflict today. I called them early and told the friendly ladies at the office. She got ahold of the plumber he switched his schedule to fit me in earlier. Thank you very much for your outstanding service over the years. You want to call these people. You won’t regret it.

Would definitely recommend. Water heater started to leak on a Sunday morning, called Hockers and they put me on the first appointment the next day to diagnose the issue. Todd provided multiple options and we had a new water heater within 24 hours. Price seemed competitive and within what I was expecting, but admittedly did not shop around. Friendly service throughout. Highly recommend.

We had a very minor gas leak happening with our 20 yr old furnace and needed a new valve on the gas line. This was our first call ever to Hockers for help. Matt was very knowledgable, explained what needed to be done, left to go get the part 45 min away and came back to finish the job. He was professional, efficient and kind and did a great job. From my call to Lisa this morning, who was also very pleasant & kind, to the end of the repair, it all was a great experience. The cost was expected and fair on a 20 yr old furnace. Hockers is my new go-to when needed for heating/cooling/plumbing/electrical! Thank you!!

Royce’s completed a basic inspection of the electrical supply system to a field power station for a pond aerator & irrigation pump from the electrical breaker to the end users about 100+ feet away. He did not find anything defective but helped me understand how the long run of supply wiring and the relatively small amp draw “could” result in the 20 amp breaker failing to trip when expected to do so. Royce offered a solution for better protecting the aerator pump which I will follow-up on with Hockers later. The price for the basic inspection ($288) seemed high, but Royce hinted that some portion may be applied to the future work if I decide to move forward.
