The Critical Role of Your Water Line

Your main water line is the primary pipe that connects your home’s plumbing system to the municipal water supply or a private well. Because it is buried underground and constantly under pressure, it is one of the most critical, yet often overlooked, components of your home’s infrastructure. When this line fails, the consequences can be immediate and severe, ranging from a sudden loss of water pressure to significant property damage and potential health risks from contaminated water.

Signs You Need a New Water Line Installation

While a new construction project is an obvious time for installation, many homeowners in De Pere and Green Bay eventually face the need for a full water line replacement. Recognizing the warning signs early can save you from a catastrophic failure.

Warning Sign – Description – Why It Requires Attention

Warning Sign – Description – Why It Requires Attention

Sudden Drop in Water Pressure – A noticeable decrease in the force of water coming from your faucets and showers, often affecting all fixtures simultaneously. – Indicates a severe leak, a blockage, or significant corrosion within the main line.

Unexplained Spike in Water Bills – Your water usage habits haven’t changed, but your monthly bill has dramatically increased. – A clear sign of a hidden leak, potentially a large one, in the underground water line.

Discolored or Cloudy Water – Water that appears brown, yellow, or rusty, especially after heavy rain or when first turning on the tap. – Suggests rust and corrosion inside the pipe, or sediment and soil entering the line through a crack.

Soggy Spots in the Yard – Patches of perpetually wet, lush grass or standing water in your yard, particularly between the street and your home. – The most common visual indicator of a leak in the buried water line.

Gurgling or Hissing Sounds – Strange noises coming from your pipes or walls when water is not actively being used. – Can be the sound of water escaping a pressurized line or air entering the system through a crack.

Age of the Pipes – Homes built before the 1980s may have galvanized steel or lead pipes, which are prone to corrosion and health risks. – Old, outdated materials should be replaced proactively to ensure safety and reliability.

If you notice any of these issues, it’s time to call the experts at Hockers for a professional inspection and assessment of your water line’s condition.

Hockers’ Professional Water Line Installation Process

At Hockers, we don’t just install pipes; we install confidence. Our professional process is designed to be as non-invasive and efficient as possible, ensuring a durable, long-lasting solution for your De Pere home.

1. Comprehensive Assessment and Planning

Every successful installation begins with a thorough understanding of the job site. Our technicians use advanced diagnostic tools to locate the existing line, identify the best route for a new one, and assess the soil and landscape conditions. We also take the time to explain the process, answer your questions, and provide a transparent, upfront estimate.

2. Material Selection: Choosing the Right Pipe

The material of your new water line is crucial for its longevity and the quality of your water. We primarily recommend and install modern, durable materials that are resistant to corrosion, tree root intrusion, and ground shifting.

  • PEX (Cross-linked Polyethylene): Highly flexible, corrosion-resistant, and a popular choice for its durability and ease of installation.
  • Copper: Known for its long lifespan and resistance to bacterial growth, though it can be more expensive and is susceptible to certain soil conditions.
  • High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE): Excellent for trenchless installation methods, offering superior strength and flexibility.

We will help you select the best material based on your home’s specific needs and the local conditions in Northeast Wisconsin.

3. Precision Installation Techniques

Depending on the project scope and your property’s layout, Hockers utilizes both traditional and modern installation methods:

A. Traditional Trenching

This method involves excavating a trench from the water source to your home. While more disruptive to the landscape, it is sometimes necessary for complex installations, large-diameter pipes, or when the existing line needs to be fully exposed for removal. Our team works meticulously to minimize disruption and restore your property as closely as possible to its original condition.

B. Trenchless Technology (Pipe Bursting)

For many replacement projects, we can use trenchless technology, which is a significant advantage for homeowners in De Pere and Green Bay. This method requires only two small access holes—one at the street and one near your home—to pull a new pipe through the path of the old one.

  • Minimal Disruption: Saves your lawn, driveway, and landscaping from extensive damage.
  • Faster Completion: The job can often be completed in a fraction of the time compared to traditional trenching.
  • Cost-Effective: Less labor and restoration work often translate to lower overall costs.

Hockers is committed to using the latest technology to provide the most efficient and least intrusive service possible.

4. Final Connection and Testing

Once the new line is in place, our technicians make the final connections to your home’s plumbing system and the main water source. We then perform rigorous pressure testing and flow rate checks to ensure the line is perfectly sealed, leak-free, and delivering optimal water pressure throughout your home. We won’t consider the job complete until we have verified that your new water line is functioning flawlessly.

Beyond Installation: Protecting Your Investment

A new water line is a major investment in your home’s future. Hockers offers advice and services to help you protect that investment and maximize its lifespan.

Water Line Maintenance Tips:

1.  Be Mindful of Landscaping: Avoid planting large trees or shrubs near the path of your water line, as roots are a common cause of pipe damage.

2.  Monitor Water Pressure: While we install pressure regulators, occasionally checking your home’s water pressure can help you spot issues before they become major leaks.

3.  Know Your Shut-Off Valve: Ensure every member of your household knows the location of the main water shut-off valve and how to use it in an emergency.

4.  Regular Inspections: Consider periodic plumbing inspections, especially if your home is older or you live in an area with shifting soil.

We have called Hockers for our plumbing issues for 19 years. They have always been curious, friendly and very reliable. I had a plumbing issue yesterday and they were here today. I had a scheduling conflict today. I called them early and told the friendly ladies at the office. She got ahold of the plumber he switched his schedule to fit me in earlier. Thank you very much for your outstanding service over the years. You want to call these people. You won’t regret it.

Would definitely recommend. Water heater started to leak on a Sunday morning, called Hockers and they put me on the first appointment the next day to diagnose the issue. Todd provided multiple options and we had a new water heater within 24 hours. Price seemed competitive and within what I was expecting, but admittedly did not shop around. Friendly service throughout. Highly recommend.

We had a very minor gas leak happening with our 20 yr old furnace and needed a new valve on the gas line. This was our first call ever to Hockers for help. Matt was very knowledgable, explained what needed to be done, left to go get the part 45 min away and came back to finish the job. He was professional, efficient and kind and did a great job. From my call to Lisa this morning, who was also very pleasant & kind, to the end of the repair, it all was a great experience. The cost was expected and fair on a 20 yr old furnace. Hockers is my new go-to when needed for heating/cooling/plumbing/electrical! Thank you!!

Royce’s completed a basic inspection of the electrical supply system to a field power station for a pond aerator & irrigation pump from the electrical breaker to the end users about 100+ feet away. He did not find anything defective but helped me understand how the long run of supply wiring and the relatively small amp draw “could” result in the 20 amp breaker failing to trip when expected to do so. Royce offered a solution for better protecting the aerator pump which I will follow-up on with Hockers later. The price for the basic inspection ($288) seemed high, but Royce hinted that some portion may be applied to the future work if I decide to move forward.

The plumber for Hockers, Jason K. did an excellent job. He was able to install a On Demand Water heater. My old tank style was starting to leak on thru the bottom. I called Hockers that morning, Jason was able to get to my house at 1:00pm and stayed till the job was done. He was very professional, great customer service skills. I recommend Hockers and Jason K.
