Hockers Home Services is proud to serve De Pere, Green Bay, and Northeast Wisconsin homeowners with reliable plumbing, heating, and cooling solutions designed to keep Wisconsin homes comfortable year-round.

A clogged drain can start as a small inconvenience and quickly become a major household disruption. Maybe the kitchen sink drains slowly after dinner. Maybe the shower fills with water around your feet. Maybe the basement floor drain backs up after a heavy rain or spring thaw.

When clogs keep coming back, basic plunging may not be enough. In many cases, homeowners need a deeper, more thorough cleaning method. That is where hydro-jetting may come in.

What Is Hydro-Jetting?

Hydro-jetting is a professional drain cleaning method that uses highly pressurized water to clear buildup from inside plumbing and sewer lines. Instead of simply poking a hole through a clog, hydro-jetting can scour the inside walls of the pipe and flush debris through the system.

A trained plumber inserts a specialized hose and nozzle into the drain or cleanout. Water is then directed through the nozzle at controlled pressure. Different nozzle types may be used depending on the pipe, clog, and condition of the line.

Hydro-jetting can help remove:

  • Grease buildup
  • Soap scum
  • Sludge
  • Mineral residue
  • Hair buildup
  • Food debris
  • Small roots
  • Sediment
  • Scale
  • Recurring drain obstructions

It is a powerful tool, but it must be used correctly. That is why hydro-jetting should be handled by experienced plumbing professionals.

How Is Hydro-Jetting Different From Snaking?

Drain snaking and hydro-jetting are both useful, but they do different jobs.

A drain snake, or auger, uses a cable to break through or pull out a clog. It can be very effective for certain blockages, especially localized clogs close to the fixture.

Hydro-jetting uses water pressure to clean more of the pipe interior. It is often better for buildup that coats the pipe walls or keeps returning after basic cleaning.

Here is the simple difference:

  • Snaking breaks through the clog.
  • Hydro-jetting helps clean the pipe.

In some situations, snaking is the right first step. In others, hydro-jetting may provide a more complete solution. Hockers can inspect the situation and recommend the method that fits your home.

When Should Homeowners Consider Hydro-Jetting?

Hydro-jetting may be worth considering when drain problems are persistent, widespread, or caused by buildup inside the line.

Common signs include:

  • The same drain clogs repeatedly.
  • Multiple drains are slow at the same time.
  • The kitchen sink keeps backing up.
  • There are sewer odors near drains.
  • Water backs up into tubs, showers, or floor drains.
  • A previous cleaning only helped for a short time.
  • Grease, sludge, or scale is suspected.
  • Tree roots have started entering the line.
  • A sewer camera inspection shows buildup inside the pipe.

Hydro-jetting is especially useful for lines affected by years of residue. In Wisconsin homes, drains may also face mineral buildup from hard water, grease from heavy kitchen use, and seasonal sewer stress from groundwater and spring thaw.

Why Do Drains Keep Clogging?

Recurring clogs usually mean something is happening beyond the visible drain opening.

Common causes include:

  • Grease poured into kitchen drains
  • Hair and soap scum in bathroom drains
  • Mineral scale from hard water
  • Food debris
  • Foreign objects
  • Tree root intrusion
  • Pipe bellies or low spots
  • Aging sewer lines
  • Poor pipe slope
  • Damaged or offset joints

Professional diagnosis matters because each cause requires a different solution. Hydro-jetting is excellent for many buildup-related issues, but damaged pipes may need repair instead of aggressive cleaning.

Is Hydro-Jetting Safe for Pipes?

Hydro-jetting can be safe and effective when performed by trained professionals. The key is knowing the condition of the pipe before using high-pressure water.

That is why Hockers may recommend a sewer camera inspection before hydro-jetting, especially for older homes or suspected main sewer line problems. A camera inspection helps identify cracks, collapsed sections, severe offsets, or fragile pipe materials.

If the pipe is in good enough condition, hydro-jetting can be a strong option. If the pipe is damaged, Hockers can explain safer alternatives.

Why Camera Inspection Matters Before Hydro-Jetting

A sewer camera inspection helps remove the guesswork. It allows the technician to see what is inside the line and where the issue is located.

A camera inspection can identify:

  • Grease buildup
  • Roots
  • Broken pipe sections
  • Offset joints
  • Pipe bellies
  • Collapsed areas
  • Heavy scale
  • Foreign objects
  • Poor previous repairs

This step helps protect your plumbing and ensures the cleaning method matches the actual problem. It also gives homeowners clearer information before making repair or maintenance decisions.

What Happens During a Hydro-Jetting Service?

While each home is different, the general process may include:

  1. Initial assessment: Hockers listens to your symptoms, asks where backups are happening, and checks affected fixtures.
  2. Access point selection: The technician identifies the best drain opening or cleanout for the service.
  3. Camera inspection when needed: If the line condition is uncertain, a camera may be used before cleaning.
  4. Hydro-jetting setup: Specialized equipment is prepared, and the hose and nozzle are inserted safely.
  5. Pipe cleaning: Pressurized water clears buildup and flushes debris through the line.
  6. Flow testing: The technician checks drainage performance after cleaning.
  7. Recommendations: Hockers explains what was found and whether maintenance, repair, or future inspection is recommended.

The goal is not just to clear the immediate clog. The goal is to help your drains work properly and reduce the chance of the same problem returning.

What Types of Clogs Can Hydro-Jetting Clear?

Hydro-jetting can be effective for many stubborn clogs, especially those caused by buildup along pipe walls.

It may help with:

  • Kitchen grease clogs
  • Bathroom soap scum
  • Sludge buildup
  • Laundry drain residue
  • Sediment in the line
  • Mineral scale
  • Small root intrusion
  • Long-term debris accumulation

However, hydro-jetting is not a cure for every drain issue. If the pipe has collapsed, separated, or developed a severe belly, cleaning may only provide temporary relief. In those cases, Hockers can recommend repair options.

Can Hydro-Jetting Help With Tree Roots?

Hydro-jetting may help cut and flush smaller root intrusions, depending on the condition of the line. Tree roots are a common sewer problem because they seek moisture and can enter through small cracks or loose joints.

However, roots usually indicate an opening in the pipe. Clearing the roots may restore flow, but the roots can return if the pipe defect remains. A camera inspection can show whether the line needs ongoing maintenance or repair.

How Often Should Drains Be Hydro-Jetted?

There is no one-size-fits-all schedule. Some homes may never need hydro-jetting. Others, especially homes with recurring sewer issues, heavy kitchen use, mature trees, or older plumbing, may benefit from periodic cleaning.

A professional recommendation should be based on:

  • Pipe age
  • Clog frequency
  • Sewer line condition
  • Household size
  • Water quality
  • Grease exposure
  • Tree root activity
  • Camera inspection findings

Hockers can help determine whether hydro-jetting should be a one-time service or part of a preventive maintenance plan.

What Can Homeowners Do to Prevent Clogs?

Good habits make a big difference.

Use this drain care checklist:

  • Do not pour grease, fats, or oils down the sink.
  • Scrape plates before washing dishes.
  • Use sink strainers.
  • Keep coffee grounds out of drains.
  • Catch hair before it enters shower drains.
  • Avoid flushing wipes, even “flushable” ones.
  • Do not flush hygiene products, paper towels, or cotton swabs.
  • Run plenty of water when using the garbage disposal.
  • Schedule service when drains slow down repeatedly.

These habits help, but they cannot fix existing pipe damage or heavy buildup. If you already have recurring clogs, it is time to call a professional.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hydro-Jetting

Is hydro-jetting better than snaking?

It depends on the clog. Snaking can be great for breaking through certain blockages. Hydro-jetting is often better for cleaning buildup from pipe walls and addressing recurring clogs.

Will hydro-jetting damage my pipes?

When done by trained professionals, hydro-jetting can be safe for many pipes. However, older or damaged lines should be inspected first to make sure high-pressure cleaning is appropriate.

Does hydro-jetting remove grease?

Yes, hydro-jetting can be very effective against grease buildup in kitchen drains and sewer lines. It uses pressurized water to break up and flush away residue.

Do I need a camera inspection first?

A camera inspection is often recommended when the clog is recurring, the home is older, or the technician suspects sewer line damage. It helps confirm that hydro-jetting is the right choice.

Clear the Clog the Right Way

A clogged drain is not just annoying. It can be a warning sign that buildup, roots, or sewer line issues are developing inside your plumbing system. Hydro-jetting gives homeowners a powerful option for clearing stubborn debris and restoring better flow when the pipe is in the right condition.

We have called Hockers for our plumbing issues for 19 years. They have always been curious, friendly and very reliable. I had a plumbing issue yesterday and they were here today. I had a scheduling conflict today. I called them early and told the friendly ladies at the office. She got ahold of the plumber he switched his schedule to fit me in earlier. Thank you very much for your outstanding service over the years. You want to call these people. You won’t regret it.

Would definitely recommend. Water heater started to leak on a Sunday morning, called Hockers and they put me on the first appointment the next day to diagnose the issue. Todd provided multiple options and we had a new water heater within 24 hours. Price seemed competitive and within what I was expecting, but admittedly did not shop around. Friendly service throughout. Highly recommend.

We had a very minor gas leak happening with our 20 yr old furnace and needed a new valve on the gas line. This was our first call ever to Hockers for help. Matt was very knowledgable, explained what needed to be done, left to go get the part 45 min away and came back to finish the job. He was professional, efficient and kind and did a great job. From my call to Lisa this morning, who was also very pleasant & kind, to the end of the repair, it all was a great experience. The cost was expected and fair on a 20 yr old furnace. Hockers is my new go-to when needed for heating/cooling/plumbing/electrical! Thank you!!

Royce’s completed a basic inspection of the electrical supply system to a field power station for a pond aerator & irrigation pump from the electrical breaker to the end users about 100+ feet away. He did not find anything defective but helped me understand how the long run of supply wiring and the relatively small amp draw “could” result in the 20 amp breaker failing to trip when expected to do so. Royce offered a solution for better protecting the aerator pump which I will follow-up on with Hockers later. The price for the basic inspection ($288) seemed high, but Royce hinted that some portion may be applied to the future work if I decide to move forward.
