Hockers Home Services is proud to serve De Pere and the greater Green Bay area with reliable plumbing, heating, and cooling solutions designed to keep Wisconsin homes comfortable year-round. Sewer line problems are one of the most stressful issues a homeowner can face. The thought of digging up your yard, tearing through landscaping, and dealing with long repair timelines can feel overwhelming.

Fortunately, modern plumbing technology has introduced a more efficient and less invasive solution: sewer pipe relining. If you’ve been dealing with recurring drain issues, slow plumbing, or suspect damage to your sewer line, understanding how relining works can help you make a confident, informed decision.

What Homeowners Need to Know About Sewer Pipe Relining

Sewer pipe relining is a trenchless repair method that restores the interior of an existing pipe without removing it. Instead of excavating and replacing the entire line, a durable liner is inserted into the damaged pipe and cured in place, forming a new pipe within the old one.

This process is especially valuable for homeowners in Northeast Wisconsin, where frozen ground, mature landscaping, and established properties can make traditional excavation costly and disruptive.

Relining provides a way to repair sewer lines while preserving your yard, driveway, and surrounding structures.

Common Problems That Lead to Sewer Pipe Damage

Sewer lines don’t fail overnight. Most problems develop gradually due to environmental conditions and everyday use. In areas like De Pere and Green Bay, common causes include:

Tree Root Intrusion

Tree roots are one of the leading causes of sewer line damage. Roots naturally seek out moisture and can enter small cracks in pipes, eventually expanding and blocking flow.

Aging Pipe Materials

Older homes often have pipes made from materials like clay or cast iron, which are more susceptible to corrosion, cracking, and deterioration over time.

Ground Movement and Freezing Conditions

Wisconsin’s freeze-thaw cycles can cause soil to shift, placing pressure on underground pipes. Over time, this movement can lead to misalignment or cracks.

Grease and Debris Buildup

Everyday use of sinks and drains can lead to buildup inside pipes, reducing flow and contributing to long-term damage.

Corrosion and Wear

Metal pipes can corrode over time, weakening their structure and making them more prone to leaks or failure.

How Sewer Pipe Relining Works: A Step-by-Step Process

Understanding the process helps homeowners feel more confident about the repair. Here’s how sewer pipe relining typically works:

Step 1: Detailed Camera Inspection

A technician inserts a high-resolution camera into the sewer line to assess the condition of the pipe. This allows for precise identification of cracks, blockages, or structural issues.

Step 2: Thorough Pipe Cleaning

Before relining can begin, the pipe must be cleaned. This is usually done using hydro jetting, which removes debris, grease, and roots to create a smooth surface for the liner.

Step 3: Liner Preparation and Insertion

A flexible liner coated with a special resin is inserted into the pipe. The liner is carefully positioned to cover all damaged areas.

Step 4: Curing the Liner

The liner is inflated and allowed to cure, either with hot water, steam, or UV light. As it hardens, it forms a strong, seamless pipe inside the existing structure.

Step 5: Final Inspection

Once curing is complete, another camera inspection confirms the repair was successful and ensures proper flow throughout the system.

Why Homeowners Choose Pipe Relining

Relining has become a popular solution for good reason. It offers several advantages over traditional excavation methods.

Minimal Disruption to Your Property

Because relining doesn’t require digging up your yard, your landscaping, driveway, and outdoor features remain intact.

Faster Completion Times

Most relining projects can be completed in a day or two, compared to several days or even weeks for traditional replacement.

Durable, Long-Lasting Results

The new liner is resistant to corrosion, root intrusion, and leaks, often lasting decades with proper care.

Improved Pipe Performance

The smooth interior surface reduces friction, allowing wastewater to flow more efficiently.

Cost Savings Over Time

While upfront costs vary, relining often reduces expenses related to excavation, restoration, and labor.

When Pipe Relining Is the Right Solution

Relining works best in specific situations. It’s typically a good option when:

  • The pipe is structurally intact but damaged
  • Cracks, leaks, or minor misalignments are present
  • Root intrusion has occurred but hasn’t collapsed the pipe
  • You want to avoid major excavation

However, relining may not be suitable if the pipe has completely collapsed or is severely misaligned.

Repair vs. Replacement: Making the Right Decision

Choosing between relining and replacement depends on several factors. Here’s a simple comparison:

Choose Relining If:

  • The pipe still maintains its general shape
  • Damage is moderate and localized
  • You want a less invasive solution

Choose Replacement If:

  • The pipe has collapsed or caved in
  • There is extensive structural damage
  • The line is severely offset or disconnected

A professional inspection from Hockers Home Services can help determine the best approach for your situation.

Signs You May Need Sewer Pipe Relining

Many sewer issues start small and gradually worsen. Watch for these warning signs:

  • Frequent drain backups
  • Slow drains throughout the home
  • Gurgling sounds from pipes
  • Unpleasant sewer odors
  • Wet or unusually green patches in your yard

These symptoms often indicate underlying pipe damage that should be addressed before it becomes a larger problem.

A Real-World Scenario in Northeast Wisconsin

Consider a homeowner in De Pere who notices recurring drain issues despite multiple cleanings. Each time, the problem temporarily improves but eventually returns.

A camera inspection reveals small cracks in the sewer line caused by root intrusion and ground movement. Instead of digging up the yard, pipe relining is used to seal the cracks and restore the pipe.

The outcome:

  • No major disruption to landscaping
  • Faster repair process
  • Long-term solution that prevents future root intrusion

This is a common example of how relining can provide an effective, low-impact solution.

Why Ignoring Sewer Line Issues Can Be Costly

Delaying sewer repairs can lead to more serious consequences, including:

  • Sewage backups inside the home
  • Water damage to floors and walls
  • Foundation issues from leaking pipes
  • Health risks from contaminated water
  • Increased repair costs over time

Addressing problems early helps protect both your home and your investment.

A Simple Sewer Line Prevention Checklist

While not all sewer issues can be avoided, homeowners can take steps to reduce risk:

  • Avoid pouring grease down drains
  • Use drain strainers to catch debris
  • Schedule periodic inspections
  • Address slow drains early
  • Be mindful of tree placement near sewer lines

These proactive steps can help extend the life of your plumbing system.

Sewer pipe relining is a specialized process that requires the right equipment and experience. A professional team ensures:

We have called Hockers for our plumbing issues for 19 years. They have always been curious, friendly and very reliable. I had a plumbing issue yesterday and they were here today. I had a scheduling conflict today. I called them early and told the friendly ladies at the office. She got ahold of the plumber he switched his schedule to fit me in earlier. Thank you very much for your outstanding service over the years. You want to call these people. You won’t regret it.

Would definitely recommend. Water heater started to leak on a Sunday morning, called Hockers and they put me on the first appointment the next day to diagnose the issue. Todd provided multiple options and we had a new water heater within 24 hours. Price seemed competitive and within what I was expecting, but admittedly did not shop around. Friendly service throughout. Highly recommend.

We had a very minor gas leak happening with our 20 yr old furnace and needed a new valve on the gas line. This was our first call ever to Hockers for help. Matt was very knowledgable, explained what needed to be done, left to go get the part 45 min away and came back to finish the job. He was professional, efficient and kind and did a great job. From my call to Lisa this morning, who was also very pleasant & kind, to the end of the repair, it all was a great experience. The cost was expected and fair on a 20 yr old furnace. Hockers is my new go-to when needed for heating/cooling/plumbing/electrical! Thank you!!

Royce’s completed a basic inspection of the electrical supply system to a field power station for a pond aerator & irrigation pump from the electrical breaker to the end users about 100+ feet away. He did not find anything defective but helped me understand how the long run of supply wiring and the relatively small amp draw “could” result in the 20 amp breaker failing to trip when expected to do so. Royce offered a solution for better protecting the aerator pump which I will follow-up on with Hockers later. The price for the basic inspection ($288) seemed high, but Royce hinted that some portion may be applied to the future work if I decide to move forward.
